Create the Thinking Patterns of an SAT Master…
Nov 27th, 2007 by Academics Plus Tutoring
Welcome to the first of 7 blog entries from our book, The SAT Success System Personal Workbook. Stay tuned for the next week as we continually post entries from our book; each entry will offer tips, hints and strategies on how to achieve SAT success!!
How you think can be just as important as what you know.
Students who think they will succeed are much more likely to succeed. Thinking success increases the chances of achieving success! Henry Ford, one of the most successful businessmen of the 20th century, was referring to the power of thought when he said “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right!” A large part of the Academics Plus Success System is identifying thought patterns and learning to engage in self-talk that is personally supportive and empowering.
Take Inventory of Self-Talk
What kind of self-talk or self-chatter runs through your mind?
Do you say things like:
“I am capable of doing anything I put my mind to.”
“I improve my SAT skills every day.”
“I am mindful of my advances.”
Or, are you more likely to say things like?
“I will never get this.”
“Why bother trying? I’ll never understand.”
“Everybody else is smarter than I am.”
What is interesting is that most students, at one time or another, talk to themselves in an unsupportive fashion, and many do so on a regular basis. This kind of self-conversation can be counterproductive at best and debilitating at worst. Therefore, it is important to make a clear distinction between empowering and disempowering language, and to identify (and use) language that empowers you!
