Did you know that that peak performers in many fields use the process of visualization to help themselves achieve high levels of success?
When Michael Jordan played for the Chicago Bulls, visualization was an active part of his preparation routine; he admits to having spent hours visualizing the ball going through the hoop. Likewise, it is said that Tiger Woods’ father encouraged his son to visualize early on, and Tiger credits the process with helping him achieve his phenomenal level of success. Tiger has said that when he steps up to the golf ball, he pictures the ball going into the hole to the exclusion of all else, every single time! Jim Carrey endorses the process of visualization too, and has revealed that he used it long before he became successful. He acknowledges sitting for hours in his car atop Hollywood Hills visualizing success, and asserts that he would not let himself go home until he firmly believed the pictures of success he was playing in his mind’s eye.
Well, what is visualization, exactly?
Visualization is a simple process in which you use your imagination to create—in your mind’s eye—what you would like to be, do or have. For example, if you want to become an Olympic gold medalist, you might imagine yourself in the Olympic stadium giving the performance of a lifetime, and then see yourself stepping onto the Olympic stage and tipping your head forward so the judge can place the gold medal around your neck. Or, if you have always wanted to be a famous author, you might imagine your name on the New York Times Best seller’s list, or “see” every person on the train reading your book. Visualization is the act of directed imagination. In essence, it is a technique that allows you to see the results you want to achieve prior to taking any action.
The process of visualization is a great tool to use to supplement your SAT preparation process.
If peak players can use visualizatio to help them achieve success, so can you! You can use visualization to help familiarize your mind and consciousness with the concept of success. Imagine what you would like to achieve, and have fun with the process. It doesn’t have to be hard work. Imagine feeling calm on the day of the test, or imagine the feeling of confidence as you effortlessly breeze through the math section, or imagine the joy you’ll feel getting the score you know you deserve.
