The 10 days of Christmas break… day 2
Dec 25th, 2007 by Academics Plus Tutoring
On the second day of Christmas break, my tutor gave to me, 10 SAT vocabulary words and 10 SAT vocabulary words…
For anyone who is signing on to our blog for the first time today, let me give you a little background on what we are doing. For each of the 10 days of winter break (excluding weekends), we will post 10 new SAT vocabulary words for you to review. We encourage you to study all the words over the holiday so that you can add 100 SAT words to your vocabulary. Look back at yesterday’s blog for the introduction to this series and for the previous list of words and check back tomorrow for a new set of words.
For all of you that began our 10 days of Christmas break with us yesterday, please note that we modified our definitions for day 1. It was pointed out to us that we were using unfamiliar SAT words to define other SAT words. While synonyms can be useful, if used as definitions they should be words that are familiar to the reader or need to be used in conjunction with a clear definition. We hope we have rectified (corrected or remedied) the situation by posting updated definitions. Thank you Jon and Chris for your input!
Here is the second set of words:
Ø Fumigate (v.): to expose to smoke or fumes, often used for the purpose of disinfecting or eradicating (eliminating) pests
Ø Hinder (v.): to obstruct or impede
Ø Gait (n.): manner of walking or moving
Ø Futile (adj.): of no avail; producing no result or effect
Ø Idiosyncrasy (n.): a quality, habit, or behavioral attribute that is distinctive and peculiar to an individual
Ø Galvanize (v.): to stimulate or spur; to arouse to awareness
Ø Laggard (adj.): falling or lagging behind; dilatory
Ø Immaculate (adj.): completely neat or clean; without spot or blemish
Ø Illusory (adj.): deceptive, unreal; tending to deceive, as by false appearance
Ø Ignoble (adj.): low in character or purpose; not noble in quality or character
