Dec 27th, 2007 by Academics Plus Tutoring
On the fourth day of Christmas break, my tutor gave to me, 10 SAT vocabulary words, 10 SAT vocabulary words, 10 SAT vocabulary words and 10 SAT vocabulary words…
For anyone who is signing on to our blog for the first time today, let me give you a little background on what we are doing. For each of the 10 days of winter break (excluding weekends), we will post 10 new SAT vocabulary words for you to review. We encourage you to study all the words over the holiday and add 100 SAT words to your vocabulary. Look back at the previous blogs for the introduction to this series and lists of words and check back tomorrow for a new set of words.
Here is the forth set of words:
Ø Haggard (adj.): worn and gaunt (emaciated) in appearance
Ø Abridge (v.): to reduce the length of; to shorten
Ø Hackney (v.): to make stale or trite by repetition
Ø Gauge (n.): an instrument for measuring
Ø Fruition (n.): fulfillment
Ø Torpor (n.): apathy, listlessness
Ø Frugal (adj.): economical; thrifty
Ø Frivolous (adj.): trivial; not serious
Ø Defer (v.): to delay or put off to some other time
Ø Defensible (adj.): defendable, capable of being justified or defended
Here’s a helpful hint for studying vocabulary: use flashcards. If you are a student at our center, you are already familiar with this technique. In fact, many non-Academics Plus students use the flashcard method to study vocabulary words as well but if you don’t, we would like to suggest that you give it a try. Buy a package of index cards and on the front of each card write the word and on the back, the definition. This way, you can test yourself whenever and whereever you like.
Our goal is to make this blog the most helpful and informative blog on Academic Success and SAT preparation. To do this, we need your help, so please give us your feedback and make comments to our blog!!
