So, we came across a blog about stress management and anxiety, written by Dr. Patricia Farrell, that we would like to share with you. Although it seems to be written in response to the recent tragedies on college campuses, the advice offered is relevant to all students of all ages, and in fact to people of all walks of life.
We encourage you to check out the full article, Anxiety and Stress Management, which is very short and will not take much time to breeze through, but wanted to post one of the statistics cited, as well as the highlighted “things to remember” from the article.
One alarming statistic cited in the article is that anxiety and panic disorders affect and estimated 2.4 million Americans. What we would like to bring your attention to is that this statistic only refers to diagnosed anxiety and panic disorders, which does not reflect a) the number of individuals who experience significant anxiety but do not seek treatment and are therefore not diagnosed or b) those who experience many of the symptoms, some to a significant degree, but do not meet criteria for a diagnosis.
As for the highlighted “things to remember,” here they are:
Ø There are no “failures” in life or coursework; everything is a learning experience
Ø Being stressed is a part of life and there are things you can do
Ø Give yourself some mental distance from the problem and talk it over with someone
Ø Asking for help, no matter what the problem, is always a good, positive move
Ø Nobody’s perfect
This list of tips, in some ways, is really a list of alternate perspectives that can assist individuals in managing unnecessary stress. We suggest giving them a try. You might find that adopting another perspective can have some very positive effects in your life.
